when you are on a layer with bodywork on press "Ctrl + U" that will bring up the hue/saturate menue, try moving around the sliders to change colour without loosing detail, howerver, using this method you can't make a car totaly wight or black withoud loosing detail, but you can make the paintwork brighter by increasing the Saturation.

I use Micrografx Picture publisher (7) which apart from the usual hue/saturation contrast etc sliders there is also a "brush" effect called sharpen...this when carefully used will bring detailing through very well where needed.

Merge all panels together then desaturate them and play with contrast a bit so they not so contrasty (optional)

Create a new layer above it which you paint the base colours on to ( include white and black if you want ) and then signs and merge them together.

which should leave you with 2 layers one of grey panels ( let say Prima layer ) and one above with all colour and decals ( Decal Layer ).

Then select layer options on decal layer and instead of normal select overlay and it should work.

Mitch told me how do it ages ago so credit to him

P.s. this works in photoshop and should work in paintshoppro if you can find layer options some where.
