Hello all,

I have some old VHS tapes and wondered what I need and how to go about getting them onto the pc for editing and then burning? I've read about something called Dazzle, do I need to buy this type of product for the transfer?

You could transfer from VHS to dvd using a standalone DVD recorder and a scart lead. Then Stick the DVD in the PC to capture and edit. Not sure which software to use though as I don't bother editing. Mac or Trash might have a better idea on software though.

The 'Dazzle' works ok mate  comes with the software. Only other thing you'll need is a scart cable to connect to it from the VCR.

Took me a while to work out the hows and why's lol but seems pretty good.

Plug it in to the high speed USB thingy in the back of your comp and away you go.

Having great fun here messing about, and theres plenty of time to be spent getting the DVD's to look right (ie going from frame to frame etc) when doing a compilation ;)

I'm the same as you mate, got lots of video that needs changing over before they all get mullered lol

I do a straight VHS to DVD transfer like Pete says linking VHS to DVD Recorder.

Then bung the DVD into your computer, rip it to the hard drive using a program called mplayer getdvd2 and that saves it into an mpeg format that Pinnacle Studio can read for editing (Pinnacle cant read the normal .vob files that a DVD has).

Fiddle about with what you want, then render and burn a master.

From what I remember, Mac said that it takes ages to capture using a capture device and he has a firewire card which is a lot faster than USB. I'm not sure how long it takes using Stu's method though as I've never done it before.

How much quicker is it Stu ? Is it possible to run the VHS faster this way. Only asking because using the Dazzle I can only run at normal play speed  unless someone nows different

No quicker I don't think mate. VHS copies to DVD Recorder at normal speed. Good thing is it doesn't tie up your PC by doing so.

Ripping the DVD to the PC doesnt take too long, depends if you take audio across. 60 minutes of footage with audio is probably about 40 minutes, without audio about 20 minutes.

The big time with Pinnacle Studio is rendering your project. This takes anywhere from 4 to 8 hours. I usually set it up to do it overnight, by the time you come down in the morning your finished master DVD should be sitting in the PC waiting for you.

Ok many thanks for the replys lads.

Think I'll do it Stu's way as it it wont interefere with the comp to much.

Cheers again, much appreciated,

Ok, I havent bought a DVD recorder yet as I have been told I can do it through my Mini DV camcorder??

Just connect the leads to the back of the video with a scart adapter and then record the footage onto the tape without any loss of quality.?

Anyone heard of this?

I think Lakey does it that way, send him a PM mate as I don't think he checks in these parts too often. He definitely uses Pinnacle and some kind of camcorder connection to the firewire port.
