Classic Hot Rods

For those rodding fans of yesteryear the Classic Hot Rods formula makes its long awaited debut at Hednesford on Bank Holiday Monday with a quite healthy number of cars racing including some blast from the past names on the entry lists!!!

I know through conversations with Stu Jackson 156 (father of Adam Jackson who makes his ASCAR debut on Sunday in the #4 machine BTW) he has been involved heavily over the winter helping build and set one of the cars.

The confirmed entry list is

3 Garry Witcomb, St. Neots

19 Iain Grayson, Longton

20 Dave Fry, High Wycombe

24 Roger Wright, Sandbach

33 Mark Hufford, Huntingdon

34 Peter Kettle, Cheshire

63 Alex Causer, Abbots Bromley

91 Glyn Butlin, Swadlincote

133 Bill Groom, Taplow

306 Geoff Bridges

391 Ian Butlin, Swadlincote

Hmmm 306 driven by Geoff Bridges....guess it will be purple and white then!  Question is which car? An anglia or Starlet?

Also on the bill for Monday is National Hot Rods with a 22 car entry, Legends with a 30 car entry, Lightening Rods with a 33 car entry, Unlimited Bangers with a 15 car entry and caravans with a rather poor 8 van entry

So with the sun set to shine, have a guess where I will be come 1.30 on Monday?  Come and say hi if you see me. lol

what exactly are classic rods lol? as in old cars?? is there a site for this

Matt, classic hot rods are a formula devised by Midlands promoters Incarace to re-introduce the Ford 1700 Pinto engined cars of the 1970s and 1980s that were the NHRPA Hot Rods, cars like my dad raced.

The idea came from the fact that 3 of the sports greatest Barry Lee, George Polley and Duffy Collard built replicas of their cars from that era and have been putting on demonstrations for the last 12-15 months.

See attached photos of my Stuart Jackson's (#156) 1978 (I think it was 78, might have been 79) Euro Winning Escort, which became my Dads, and driven to some success. Also Dads Mk2 Blue Escort (105) from 1983 and then the trio of Stars at Spedeweekend last year.

thanx for the piccies mag and like psyko says the old rods just look so much better, do you know if there is a fixture list for the classic rods or is it a one off meeting ??

Theres another meeting for them at Brum 11th june and 9th Oct at NIR.

Thats all I spot on the incarace fixture list anyhow!.

3 Garry Witcomb has raced a few mk1+mk2 escorts in rookie bangers at NIR so I think he might be out in one for the rods.

Barry is correct about Brum 11th June, they return to Hednesford on 13th/14th August for the Nationals before heading to NIR on 9th Oct.  The plan was to see how many cars get built.  The formula was only announced at last years Nationals....If all 11 cars turn up on Monday and they run well then, who knows but I'm sure that Incarace will add further fixtures.

I know that 133 Bill Groom is in the mk1 escort below....anyone know which cars the other guys are/might be in?

Only 6 cars were actually running on Monday, which was a bit of a let down, and 3 Garry Witcomb blew his diff in practice, which was a shame as he was mighty quick.

The surprise was a certain Mr Jeff Simpson behind the wheel (just lol) of the 306 car for the day.....his words after the 12 lap practice, whilst still in the car was "christ I'm glad that is over, I thought I was having a heart attack, not sure if I remembered to breathe out there!"

There were 1 Mini, 4 mk1 Escorts, 4 Anglias and a Hillman Imp present at the track though 4 of them were not ready in time.  The only person missing was Billy Groom.  There are a number of cars in preperation currently, including cars for Pete Stevens and Gordon Bland.  Mark Bond who quite often over sells things recons that by the Nationals there will be 20-25 cars running....which might mean 16 or so.  Though there are the cars of Barry Lee and Duffy Collard out there, so that makes 15 already with the two midland legends above.

The rules for the formula are as close to NHRPA Rules first published in 1976 (29 years ago!) as first devised by Philip Bond.

There are in fact 8 rounds to the 2005 'championship', 4 being at Incarace tracks, one at Skeggy, the Hot Rod World Final support at Ipswich and at Buxton in memory to the late George Mycock who was fundamental to Hot Rods success in those early days.  I know he always welcomed us travelling about 50 miles to race with open arms and some decent travel money, not to mention the 'cheap' bar afterwards! (alas I was only 8-13 during those years, so no drinking for me, just coke and crisps!)

Attached are some of the photos I took from the day...hope you enjoy them like I did watching them!

Timmy you are in luck m8!  They are on the bill on June 11th at Brum with the F2s WQR, which i would asume you will be making to journey to (unless you are that confident of qualifying lol).  I hopefully will be there that night to, as it should be a cracking meeting with the last Hot Rod qualifier too!!!!
