Adding Outline On Paintshop Pro

if its text you want outlining, the best way is to have the outline colour and the inside colour selected when you add the text. but using the line tool to go round the edge usually works then just merge it to the layer you want or allternatively use the drop shadow with opacity at 100 and blur at 0 and add it to each corner (4 shadows and merge it together)

eg, vertical 2 horizontal -2 (bottom left corner)

then vertical 2 horzontal 2 (bottom right corner)

then vertiacal -2 horizontal 2 (top right corner)

and vertical -2 horizontal -2 (top left corner)

this way you have shadow with a sharp edge all round the text/image.

hope it helped.

The pen tool does work well once you get used to it......you can set the line widths a little better than with shading and, if you use the pen tool as a vector it creates a new layer and you can right-click on it and select 'edit mode' to manipulate the path before you apply (which basically finishes it, meaning you can't edit afterwards). One other handy tip (well i use it lol), if you need a thin outline and you start losing the the opacity in curves etc, use a thicker line and follow the edge of the item you want to outline so your edge is half on/half off the item. When your path is done and applied, change to a raster layer then move the layer below the layer with the item on :) the inside half is hidden by the item but you'll get stronger colour for the part of the path that's still visible, then merge the item down onto the path to complete :)

Easiest way IMO....

Get your text sorted or whatever it is you wish to outline, then, Select All > Float > Defloat. Now you should have your sign selected exactly around the edges...Then goto selections at the top, modify, expand. Expand it to the thickness of line you want I.e. 1 for a thin line, and 4 for a thick line...Now create a new layer below the layer your sign is on, then simply flood fill the selection black or whatever colour you want the outline to be. To finish the sign hide any other visible layers so you only see the sign and outline and then Merge Visable.

May sound tricky at first but once done a couple times takes a matter of seconds to get a perfect outline.

Wouldn't let me edit previous post but here's an In Depth Tutorial on how I add outlines -

____________________________________________________________________

1.First, on a NEW Layer, create the sign you wish to place an outline around:

____________________________________________________________________

2.Then use the rectangle selection box to select around the sign:

____________________________________________________________________

3.Then goto Selections > Float (located at top of the Paint Shop Pro window) :

____________________________________________________________________

4.Then goto Selections > Defloat:

Outline_Tutorial-04.jpg

____________________________________________________________________

5.Then create a New Raster layer BELOW the layer you have your sign on:

____________________________________________________________________

6.Then goto Selections > Modify > Expand:

____________________________________________________________________

7.Then choose a thickness of line, lower the number, thinner the line:

____________________________________________________________________

8.Then making sure your on the New Raster Layer, Floodfill the selection Black, or whatever colour you want the outline to be:

____________________________________________________________________

9.Then 'Hide' every Layer APART from the Layer with your sign on and the New Raster Layer:

____________________________________________________________________

10.Then Right Click the New Raster Layer in the Layers Palette and select Merge > Visible:

____________________________________________________________________

11.Then 'Un-Hide' the Layers you hid a minute ago, making sure your on the Layer that you have the Outlined Sign on, Select the sign with a Rectangle Selection and goto Selections > Float:

____________________________________________________________________

12.Now you should notice that the Sign is on it's own 'Floating' Layer meaning we can now delete the Layer that we just 'Merged'. So making sure the Layer BELOW the 'Floating Selection' Layer is highlighted, Right Click it and press 'Delete':

____________________________________________________________________

13.Then goto Selections > Select None:

____________________________________________________________________

14.Now you should have your new Outlined Sign on the Paint Layer showing details through:

____________________________________________________________________

This may look tricky at first but once done a couple of times you will be able to create perfect outlines in a matter of seconds.

Hoping this will not only help you but maybe other people New to Paint Shop Pro

Comments on wether it's easy to follow or not please, should be able to explain more if needed
