Very off topic i know but here it goes -

I was thinking of getting a Saxo 1.6i VTR and i just wondered if anyone on here has owned one or is a mechanic maybe and could give me some idea if they are a good car or likely to be alot of trouble??

Any help much appreciated

I used to have a saxo 1.1 a few years ago.

To be honest, i quite liked it......until the accelerator cable snapped and had a few problems with a couple of bits and pieces on it!

As it's really a left hand build car but with the cables just stretched from the right hand side to the left hand part of the engine, i'd suggest changing them for a slightly thicker one than the bit of cheesewire that they use!

to be honest they aint " That bad " Clutches go on them easy.. Headgaskets go Quiete easy too ... ermmm done a few drive shafts on them at work coz theyve snapped when people rage em BUT saying all that they only brake ( like anything really ) if u hammer them.. they often start making a Weird noise like a valve is sticking, ive never investigated further into that but suspicion is deffo a sticking valve, if u find ure self a good one and dont abuse it .. your onto a winner .. there a little pocket rocket too .. hope this is some kinda help mate :)

Had two VTS must be 7 or 8 years ago including one of the first few fitted with a supercharger. Headgaskets went on one and was on its way out I think on the other so look out for that. Crappy build quality in general, typical french car lol

but all in all a superb car, one of the most fun handling cars I've had, a lot more stable and better handling than the pug 205 in my opinion. Think radiators can rot easy, and I had a engine mount go, but that was a 5 minute fix. Just make sure you get one in very good allround condition and not suffering from neglect otherwise you'll pay for it later. Most will have been well & truely thrashed by now

DONT GO THERE lol.. saxo vtr's run same engine as the 106 XSi 1.6 and there crap i had a 106 XSi with a 1.4 which lasted me quite a while then put the 1.6 lump in it out of a vtr and it lasted 2 mins the diffs go on them, the head gaskets go on them and the clutches go on them. overall there CRAP so if it was me id avoid it... not trying to completley steer you away from it as its your choice, im just telling it to you how ive already seen it lol...

and to what jona said i had that ticking noise on the 1.6 lump i had after about 2 months of using it then 4 days after it started it filled all 4 bores to the brim with water

Quite local to you that one Grouch ;) you'll have to get the train? lol Although 2.0 I'd be tempted :)

His old Fiat Brava just about seized up on him this week and is looking to get a car before work again on Monday, so if Dazza's advice is not just a one off, I hope its not too late lol

Cheers for the help guys, i was supposed to see a saxo this morning but it had already sold.

But i managed to find a Bravo which was even better, its a 1.6 16v HLX. 12 months mot, 6 monthes tax, its a y reg and has 50,000 on the clock with regular services at fiat dealers in the Log Book.

At 1500 i thought it was a good enough deal so im picking it up on Monday, iv put a pic up its not my car but it is identical

My old man had a 131 few years back exact same as pic, fiats version of a mrk 2 escort....... janspeed exhaust, agra tuned engine and twin 40's was quick in its day

Bit better than yer hair dresser FILTERED these days ;)

Yeah its a great car. My dad used to have a Fiat Uno Turbo Sport, the fastest hatchback of its time it told me it would beat absolutely everything off a standing start, before that he had a Fiat 500 Abarth which was pretty quick too. When he started racing F1 he had Transit which wasn't fast enough for him.. until he fitted some V6 power to it lol.

Since retiring from racing hes moved onto Alfa Romeos, can't tell you what we've had, all sorts, too many to mention. I think his favourite being the 33 which was really quick but currently have a pretty gutless 155 which is on its way out to be replaced with either a new Fiat Bravo or Alfa Mito.... can you tell my dad and I work for them?

Don't suppose you got any pics of the Lancia have you Marty??

Can get a pic of my dads Alfa 155 Silverstone when it stop raining but unfortunately it needs a lot of work doing to it cosmetically although the essential bits are mostly brand new. We think the steering rack has gone now if thats the case we'll be selling it on its too a big a job to do and the just isn't worth it any more.
