anyideas whats wrong

i used to get exception access violation errors quite regularly Bruce, but a review and replacement of sound drivers (and the C-media software that was giving me another error in windows) seemed to kill the problem - have u used original drivers for sound or latest updated ones? as it was it would give the error then work the next time if i re-tried to launch the game, but it was hitty-missy.

I'd say to uninstall everything for Nascar Heat and reinstall it all.

In the old days, we were told to go into the game and do a lap or two around a track before adding any patches, as this generates some files which may be needed. I don't know if this is still the case, but it can't hurt.

This way, you can see when the problem occurs-

Does it occur with a standard installation of Heat?

Or after the nocd patch?

Or after patch 1.72/1.80 whatever it is these days?

The other possibility is to reinstall directX, as you've changed soundcard. Also be sure to disable the motherboard sound in the BIOS if you've put an actual sound card in.

A good test to try is to go to the start menu, choose run and enter

dxdiag

and run this through all the tests. It might highlight any problems you're having. Sound card problems can often be mitigated (certainly this is true of l!ve cards) by going into the sound properties, and knocking back hardware acceleration by one step.

Let us know how it goes.

You could try physically removing the sound card from the machine along with removing all the drivers for it then see whether heat will run. If it does work then at least you will know that its definately a sound card issue. I'm assuming heat will run without a sound card I don't see why it shouldn't but I've never tried it.
