Online Racing

Having invested in a new desktop i'm interested in joining an online racing league for the tooz, although I have no previous experience and my knowledge of pc related issues is very very limited. Having read previous threads on the ftooz and browsed the UKdirt forums I am now more confused than ever!

I understand the base program required is rFactor but that's were the problems begin, would I be better off to download from the ISI official site, the p2p torrent beta download or the other one and then pay the £25.99 to activate the game or purchase a cd version, would the 2008 SE be adequate?, I did read on the threads that Simstox had a SE cd available for purchase but there is no link on the website, is this version still available and which option would be the most viable and are they all the required V1.255?

Once the core program is installed it looks pretty straight forward as to the downloading of the mods required with plenty of links available, but then I get way out of my depth..I have no idea what ping or jitter means or how to configure my pc correctly, if it helps my running specs are i7 quad core CPU @3.40Ghz with 8Mb of RAM and a NVIDIA GeForce GT 420 with 2Gb dedicated memory and a base rating of 5.7, would this spec be sufficent to run rFactor smoothly whilst online?, if so which site is the best for racing the tooz, UKdirt, Simstox or UKsom?.

On the Simstox website it states all participants are required to use wheels and pedals, is that the same across the board and will the outlay be worth it?, it seems the G27 is the one to go for is that recommended?, I have registered with UKdirt but not paid a subscription as of yet, is it possible to change your nickname or will I have to re-register?

I know it's alot of questions but any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated however small or in depth..thank you in anticipation.

Hi Stu,

Firstly, welcome to the site :).

For installation, i havent tried the pre-activated SE disc but i'd suggest you're as well to just download the full thing from rfactor.net and install that (make sure you get the full one, not the 'lite' as that had sound files and stuff removed that you'll end up needing to get from elsewhere anyway but bear in mind that the full version 1.255 is 1gb so it's worth setting it away at a non-peak time depending on who your ISP is, what your speeds are etc etc). Install it (if you're on vista make sure you install it with full admin level rights or turn UAC off - see this post from Hutch on disabling UAC) and then test it to make sure everything's working ok, set your career driver up and buy a car and do a few laps and if that all goes ok (it's worth doing this without setting a controller up....no sense buying a wheel and hitting another problem with the game eh lol) then use the buy feature in the first screen when u start rfactor to buy the game 'proper'.

Your PC spec seems more than able to run the game (i run it on much less) but your best way to check this is basically enter the open online servers for some practice and go from there.

Controller........well as you say Simstox operated a wheel-only-with-cockpit-view policy so if you're looking to race there in the longer term then it's worth getting a wheel if you have the cash. G27s are the dogs and you do get what you pay for (if you want to really spend then start looking at specialised pedal boxes with load cells and watch your pennies go flying out of your account haha) but again you can run with much less (Logitech DFP wheels can be found on ebay for £40 on a good day) and if you're not interested in using a wheel then some (i'm whispering here) still use pads but they're all tossers aren't they TomD (long-time padder and current UK Dirt F2 world champ hahaha).....if you're going to use a pad just get used to using both thumbsticks for throttle brake and steering and accept that them on the wheels have more control than you ;)

Where's best? Oh my ar5e is hurting from sitting on this fence so really UK Dirt and Simstox both have their benefits and their flaws so for the grand total of £22 i'd say join both :) UKSOM aren't a league, they *(well 'we') are a mod group so while there's a server open occasionally and hosted evenings from time to time there's no formal 'join' thing although it's worth joining the forum if you need specific info regarding UKSOM mods (and don't mind having the pi55 taken out of you on the way ;) )

Have fun :) wrighty

Hi Stu

No problem changing your nickname, drop me a PM and I'll sort that for you.

We are also running various "open meetings" across the formulas where you don't have to be a paid up member to race online and then you get to join for a reduced fee if you like it enough.

I think you have missed the F2's open meeting, but we have been running a new Superstox series which is open to anyone, I think there are still 2 weeks left if you want to catch it.

Whatever you decide, I'm sure you will have fun.
