watto Posted November 11, 2008 Report Posted November 11, 2008 Hi there, Hope to get a few suggestions on this one please if possible. My norton internet security is coming up for renewal - I am running 2008. It has let me down on a couple of occassions in the last year and was thinking of changing to something else. 1. What does anyone else recommend? 2. How on earth can you remove all traces of norton from your system if I change protection as I would imagine it is more difficult to remove a protection program than a normal run of the mill program? Any help or advice appreciated. Thanks Watto
Danny6660 Posted November 11, 2008 Report Posted November 11, 2008 Avast + Adaware is what i use never let me down.

In terms of removing norton, i've not had personal experience of it but i use ccleaner for general maintenance, its free and excellent for things like removing registry entries, startup instructions etc.
The London Allstar Posted November 12, 2008 Report Posted November 12, 2008 Like Danny i use Avast and Adaware. I also use the firewall software ZoneAlarm. All of which is free and hasn't yet let me down, swapped from Norton to Avast about 5 months ago. As Wrighty suggested, use Ccleaner to get rid of norton, it's the best way
Damo127 Posted November 12, 2008 Report Posted November 12, 2008 (edited) Avast is top notch i recommend it to anyone! Plus its free type in google Avast Home Edition Edited November 12, 2008 by Damo127
watto Posted November 16, 2008 Author Report Posted November 16, 2008 I have got ccleaner on my pc but how do I get it to remove Norton?
crewie Posted November 17, 2008 Report Posted November 17, 2008 I have got ccleaner on my pc but how do I get it to remove Norton? Go on the norton/symantec website....you need to install an un-installer for their cruddy software...it takes bloody ages for the program to work once youve download it, dont worry if it seems to be doing nothing...it took mine half an hour to start up.
wrighty496 Posted November 17, 2008 Report Posted November 17, 2008 I have got ccleaner on my pc but how do I get it to remove Norton? if you open ccleaner, either by looking in yr start>all programs or right-click on the recycle bin (if you didnt untick stuff it attaches itself to the recycle bin, so u can right-click on the bin to open ccleaner) to open. When opened, there are buttons down the left-hand side for registry and tools. Firstly, if you've deleted norton, you can go into the registry section and look for redundant links to do with norton (always be careful in registry editors, if you're not sure, don't bin) and then in tools you can uninstall any files allied to norton, then click the startup button to remove any traces of norton in the startup routine. ccleaner's an excellent tool m8, take the time to read the help, it'll see you right
crewie Posted November 17, 2008 Report Posted November 17, 2008 Heres the link to the Norton removal tool page: http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgen...005033108162039
watto Posted November 18, 2008 Author Report Posted November 18, 2008 Does the avast have a built in firewall? If not what should I use? Thanks in advance
F2-Fan Posted November 19, 2008 Report Posted November 19, 2008 No Avast doesn't have a built in firewall, if your running Windows XP or Vista just use the one that come with that. I have found that to work perfectly well.
The London Allstar Posted November 19, 2008 Report Posted November 19, 2008 Zone Alarm is a good firewall, i use it and have never had any problems. Anything that tries to acces the internet you get a popup and you can choose wether to allow or disallow it and also with requests coming in from the net!
wee dode Posted November 19, 2008 Report Posted November 19, 2008 (edited) I use AVG free and spybot search and destory to get rid of the adaware, virus's etc. and never had any problems Edited November 19, 2008 by wee dode
