How old is your monitor? I have an old one that goes all bottle necked in the middle of the screen. Can you try another monitor?

sounds like it must be the mobo to me, does it change if you gently wobble the socket that the graphics card is in?

Ah right. I was going to say, the last time I saw a screen like that, it was because my VGA card came unseated from the board due to monitor cable wobble and lack of securing screws at the time.
