What is a poly ?

just wondering if anyone knows what a poly is ?

ive got 2 3d models of a bluebird and a supra but i dont know what a poly is

 

if someone could tell me it would be a great help

I'm kinda stumped here.

If a poly is a face, and the 1st picture shows a face. How come the 2nd picture is also a poly but still has a face?
