At the ORCi Appeal Hearing yesterday (June 22nd), the ORCi found that the original verdict (by the NHRPA) would not be overturned, and by implication the twelve month sentence would also remain as Smith had not appealed against this aspect of the verdict. 18. New guidelines for checking the use of tyre softener - Effective 30 April 2005 onwards. During March and April 2005, there has been extensive testing of tyre softness, carried out at the majority of BriSCA F2 Stock Car venues. The findings were discussed at the meeting of BriSCA F2 promoters on 19 April, from which a set of new guidelines for checking use of tyre softener, were recommended to the Board of Control. These have been further discussed to arrive at the following position. Pre Meeting Test: When checked before racing, all tyres should return a minimum durometer reading of 54 when checked everywhere on the tyre. The test is only a starting point for the day’s tyre testing procedures. Reason: The lowest recorded durometer reading found on an untreated slick tyre, when exposed to heat (to simulate being left in sunlight), was 54. Note: Hence, any tyre that returns a reading of less than 54, MUST have been treated with softener of some description. It is therefore in the driver’s own interest to only use tyres that meet the minimum reading of 54. Post Race Test: When checked after racing, any tyre that returns a minimum durometer reading of less than 44, shall be deemed illegal. Reason: The lowest recorded durometer reading found on an untreated slick tyre, at the end of a race, under ‘typical’ racing conditions, was 44. Post Final Test: The first three cars home in the final, and three more that finish the race, will be tested immediately the final ends. The lowest aggregate reading will be compared with the average of the other five aggregate readings. If the difference between the lowest aggregate reading and the average of the other five aggregate readings is more than 10.0%, then the driver with the lowest aggregate reading will be subject to the relevant penalties. Note: When all finalists pass the green flag at the start of the final, it is completely at random, and open to chance, which six cars will form the end of race tyre softness test. This can NOT be manipulated in any way. Review The above guidelines will continue to be under constant review, and will remain in place until such time as ALL registered drivers can be notified of a change via the BSCDA F2 Newsletter. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Board of Control, has upheld the recommendation from Autospeed that Mike James (717) be excluded from all results at St Day on 3 April. At the end of the Final at St Day on 3 April, the aggregate readings of his tyres were more than 15% lower than the average of the other five cars tested.
