I actually installed 3DSMax once. Then I uninstalled it about 30 minutes later in a cold sweat, never to look back. Here's to the moddlers, we'd be nowhere without them !
  2. Autoexec is what runs the CD when you put it in the drive- try either booting with the CD already in the PC, or, when putting it in the drive, hold the SHIFT key- this will stop it loading its autoexec commands, which may be borked rubbish. Once you've got the CD in without errors annoying you, go into My Computer, right click on the disc in the list (D drive or whatever) and choose Explore, rather than Open. Hopefully you'll find something called "Setup.exe" or .MSI or something like that- try running that. If all this fails, or it's not the problem I'm guessing, try looking for software to download- tell us the make and model of the tablet, and whether it's USB, serial, whatever.
  3. Looks like the computer ran out of memory, the 32mb gfx card doesn't look too keen, either- make sure graphics options are all turned down to minimum and see how that goes- change audio down to 8bit? also. See if the track loads without too many cars on screen (like through garage, or set the number of opponents low in an offline race).
  4. Shame whoever made the bodykit didn't make it to actually fit a Metro. The 6R4 ran on a Maestro floorpan, and that kit seems to have kept the same dimensions. I did see a "6R4" Metro once with a body kit that at least fit properly, but it was always a dissapointment to see rear seats where the V6 should be.
  5. Talk about a Sheep in Wolf's clothing.
  6. Fantastic- I was hoping someone would make a new short oval on the S2 car park. There should be a file holding the layout that you can hand out to people so anyone can host it.
  7. Uninstall your scanner software, if you have any.
  8. Still doesn't work on my machine. Only thing left to try (short of a complete reformat) is a completely new disc drive.
  9. Do you mean you want to go round your friend's house and play there (where there's broadband) ? That should be possible, and I'm fairly sure other people run on shared connexions. The PCs would either have to be networked together and use Internet Connexion Sharing, or else (preferably) there'll be a router on the cable/adsl modem. As for help guides, etc... www.ukdirt.co.uk Side menu- check out League Information (rules, procedures, etc) and Guides (installation etc). The download pages also have some notes in them.
  10. Also with stuff like Javascript not working (fancy menus and the like), I have a feeling that IE is set to high security, which may also be why cookies are blocked by default. You might need to knock it down a touch. When I used to use IE, I went through the security list and set anything that said "allow" to "ask" or something like that. You get pestered by boxes asking if you want to let blah blah run, but you don't get stung by dodgy activex scripts and the like. I use firefox now, and since Jamie fixed the ukdirt site, that works great.
  11. Bruce, I'd still like to see if reinstalling directX will work for you, along with the BIOS and sound acceleration settings I suggested.
  12. I'd say to uninstall everything for Nascar Heat and reinstall it all. In the old days, we were told to go into the game and do a lap or two around a track before adding any patches, as this generates some files which may be needed. I don't know if this is still the case, but it can't hurt. This way, you can see when the problem occurs- Does it occur with a standard installation of Heat? Or after the nocd patch? Or after patch 1.72/1.80 whatever it is these days? The other possibility is to reinstall directX, as you've changed soundcard. Also be sure to disable the motherboard sound in the BIOS if you've put an actual sound card in. A good test to try is to go to the start menu, choose run and enter dxdiag and run this through all the tests. It might highlight any problems you're having. Sound card problems can often be mitigated (certainly this is true of l!ve cards) by going into the sound properties, and knocking back hardware acceleration by one step. Let us know how it goes.
  13. Your game thinks it's missing part of one of the actual .car files. check that all your downloaded parts are intact and installed correctly- you won't find an actual file called mk2black.tab because it's buried in another file. As Pedz says- check the ukdirt site and be sure to have installed all relevant patches.
  14. I don't think LFS will be moddable until after S3 is done and dusted- the three guys only make their money by enticing us with more tracks and cars that they put in themselves, so other people making free ones will hurt them now. What you can do, though, is make autotest courses. Someone made an oval using stacks of tyres to mark it out on the old S1 car park. Maybe if S2 will let you race multiple cars on autotest layouts and place proper barriers, then some short oval racing will be on the cards.
  15. I'd been playing DTR online for a while, on and off, and then DTRSC. I found UKDirt while trawling for DTRSC related stuff. I think I joined in somewhere not long before the proper stock car chassis came out (I remember races full of Will Yarrows). At the time I raced as Spiff, #82. I wandered away from UKDirt for a while, and when I checked up, everyone was on Nascar Heat and there were already plenty of UK/Dutch tracks made. I bought that and joined back in. The car I use now is the same car and paintjob I used when I rejoined in the Heat era, though I made a couple of fancier ones when I went up the grades one year.
  16. I'd agree- especially with no beeps, it sounds like a dead mobo. Though that could be because the motherboard speaker isn't plugged in- I had a computer that wouldn't POST while the sticky tape had come loose off the case speaker soldering.
  17. Well, if the disk has been partitioned, and formatted properly, the only other thing I can think of is some confusion on the Heat installer's part to do with read only folders, or hidden/system folders- is the installation being carried out under an Administrator login? If everything fails, try installing the essentials package, then copying over the files from the Heat CD, then patching up etc.
  18. When the PC was "wiped clean" was it reformatted? You should be able to see with the control panel->administrative tools->storage->disk management screen. It will tell you the size and filesystem of all the partitions on your PC. Go look at that and tell us What partitions you have, what filesystem and what size they all are.
  19. Did anyone see this? Good coverage or the usual long shots making all the cars look slow, with the sound muted to a constant low drone behind the commentator like all previous oval racing coverage has been?
  20. What patch are you running for Heat? Have you confirmed it with the number in the bottom corner of the screen in the options screen?
  21. I switch ZoneAlarm off to race online.
  22. We still don't know which exact model it is, unless I missed it somewhere...
  23. http://www.scanner-drivers.com/companies/170.htm ???
  24. I don't know if it's something like a particular car or texture that's too much for the 16mb of graphics memory. Make sure not to select high detail cars maybe? If it's a low profile type of computer, then cards are hard to come by (half-height), or if it's PCI only (no AGP) then it's not worth wasting money on upgrading the gfx even if you could.
